The Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura yesterday (17/1/2014) met with district leaders of Lira and the business community to resolve the conflict between the public and the local Police here.
The meeting took place at Lira Hotel.
The public had raised the issue of Police’s failure to arrest thugs who shot and killed a businesswoman Susan Akidi Eryau in Lira town recently.
The public were also angered that the suspects who had earlier robbed two other businessmen had not been arrested.
The RDC of Lira, Susan Akany informed the meeting of the security challenges in the district which includes illegal guns, street children, counterfeit and criminals who had gone to South Sudan but returned recently due to the ongoing conflicts there.
The RDC acknowledged that the Police had done good work in the district but in the last few weeks they had relaxed.
“We have been very peaceful, even during the festive seasons we didn’t have any problem, and it was really peaceful” the RDC said.
Gen. Kayihura said that he had come to Lira to solve the problem and remove the fear of insecurity from the public.
“I have come here with a team to get rid of that fear of insecurity in you,” Gen. Kayihura said.
Gen. Kayihura regretted the incidences where Lira Police failed to protect the people.
“I want to apologize for not protecting Susan (Akidi) and other people who have been robbed, it’s our main duty to protect Ugandans as mandated by the Constitution, and we are going to rectify the weakness of policing here in Lira” He said.
Sixteen suspects have been arrested to assist in the investigation of Susan’s death.
