The OC Bugembe police post Nuwagaba Patrick together with his personnel PC Muchunguzi Julius and Waikubi Alex have been arrested over the Friday shooting at Bugembe in Jinja district during the inter-schools athletics competitions were one pupil was killed and another injured.
Ntare Nathan a pupil of Nakanyonyi primary school was on Friday shot dead as the police tried to calm students who had got involved in a fight and had began throwing stones at one another. The students were fighting fellow students whom one of them attempted to save his car from flying stones being thrown by the other students and in the process knocked down a colleague.
This made the students to become more chaotic. The police who were deployed to secure the competition began to shoot in the air to disperse the fighting students.
Kibilige Francis another student is admitted to Mulago Hospital ward 3B with injuries.
The Inspector Gen. of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura has today visited the family of the deceased pupil to offer condolences and to re-assure them and the community of Bugembe of police action against the perpetrators.
The Inspector General of police has also instructed that the organizers be arrested for not following the rightful procedure. The organizers had prior to the competition written to the OC police post instead of the DPC seeking for police services yet the right procedure is to write to the DPC.
As aforementioned, the OC police post has also been arrested to explain his role in the events as they unfolded.
Further information on this matter will be availed as the investigations continue.
The competitions attracted over 23 participating secondary schools.
