The First Lady and Member of Parliament for Ruhaama constituency, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni has officially opened Kisoro maternal ward which has been under renovation.
The hospital maternal ward renovations were funded by different organizations and individuals who took part in the Kisoro marathon run the previous year, where the Inspector General of Police was the chief runner.
Hon. Janet Museveni said that there is no reason as to why mothers in Uganda should continue to die while giving birth. She said that shockingly 4300 maternal deaths are registered in Uganda every year yet all these can be turned into history.
The first lady said “most of these deaths are preventable as long as people cooperate to fight against the causes. I advised men and women to attend antenatal care together and ensure that every birth is attended to by skilled medical personnel”.
The first lady hailed the Police and The Inspector General for the amount of work done in Kisoro district through community policing.
In a speech read by AIGP Asuman Mugenyi; the Inspector General of Police has emphasized partnership and involvement in issues affecting the public in the new era of community policing. In doing so, the police will be able to bridge the gap between the public and the force and in the same way to combat crime.
Dr. Michael Baganizi, the Medical Superintendent Kisoro hospital, said the refurbishment of the maternity ward costed 650 million shillings and thanked those who supported the renovation; who included: Uganda Police, Voice of Kigezi, Crane Bank, MTN, Movit and many other well-wishers for their contribution towards this noble cause aimed at reducing maternal deaths.
