The Territorial Police in North Kyoga and Lira City West, arrested a gang of 7, that has been exchanging counterfeit dollars and fleecing the public in Lira City. The suspects include; Odur Joshua, Odongo Denish, Ogwang Geoffrey, Akite Nancy, Atim Collin and Aguti Eunice. An additional 10 members of the racket, were arrested after they attacked and harassed the LC1 Chairman of Ober Kampala Cell, after he tipped police. These include Amone Moses (gang leader), Olum Moses, Otema Danies, Ojara Jimmy, Opio Aron, Opio Isaac, Nono Stephen, Odong Elvis, Ebong Jimmy and Opio Moris. All are in custody for conspiracy to theft and dealing in counterfeit notes.
In a separate development, the territorial police in Bukedi South and Busia district, has in custody a businessman, identified as Mukunja Noah alias Ochieng, aged 54, from Nangwe village, in Busia Municipality after supplying fake dollars in a transaction of 150 million that he had received from Hassan Ahmed Omar, a money changer, in Busia municipality. The two business persons had entered into a financial transaction, on the 27.09.2023, at around 11am, at customs road, to exchange USD 90,000/= into Ugx 328,500,000/=. As a result, the suspect was advanced Ugx 150 million, but instead brought fake dollars, in exchange. The metallic box with counterfeit dollars was recovered and suspect arrested.
We continue to remain committed in fighting counterfeit and fake currency dealers, on all streets. These arrests and successful recoveries of counterfeit dollar, should act as a warning to other rogue business persons, that we will pursue them and have them charged to court.
