The Joint Task Force continues with its enforcement of the ban on campaigns in the Districts/Centres of Jinja (Jinja City inclusive), Kabale, Kalungu, Masaka (Masaka City inclusive), Tororo, Kampala, Luwero, Wakiso, Greater Mukono (Buikwe, Buvuma, Mukono, Kayunga), Mbarara District (Mbarara City inclusive), Kabarole district (Fort portal City inclusive), Kasese and Kazo, after they were categorized as High sustained and diffuse transmission districts/areas.
We know the unprecedented challenges with canvassing, many candidates find the not an ideal situation for the candidates and political parties, but we ask them to heed to the public warning from the electoral commission about holding large gatherings at high risk areas.
All candidates should know that the health and safety of Ugandans is of paramount significance. As you focus on how to win the election, also focus on how to help Ugandans stay safe.
The candidates at all levels should start planning how to protect the electoral process as Covid-19 becomes worse. The alternative is to gather virtually either online via Television and Radios, Community Based Public Address Systems (Kizindaalo) etc, Facebook live events, Volunteer Phone Calls and SMS.
We would like to issue a stern warning to candidates/political parties that continue to hold mass rallies that it is too dangerous. They have to adjust accordingly for the sake of protecting the health of the community.
So far, none of the candidates/political parties have come out with a formal statement cancelling their campaign events in these respective districts/cities and how they will contend with the Electoral Commission directive.
Let us all keep alive as the general elections are quickly approaching with only 10 days remaining.
