SAFETY MEASURES FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON

As we approach the festive season, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has intensified operations aimed at ensuring a safe and enjoyable festive period for all road users. These operations, code-named “Arrive Alive,” are being conducted countrywide to curb road crashes and enforce compliance with traffic laws.

In the past one week, a total of 644 drivers were apprehended for various traffic offences, including:

i. 325 for operating vehicles in dangerous mechanical conditions

ii. 124 for reckless driving, including speeding and reckless overtaking

iii. 123 for illegal vehicle modifications

iv. 23 for driving under the influence of alcohol

v. 17 for driving without valid licences

vi. 14 for dangerous loading

vii. 10 for abandoned vehicles

viii. 8 for carrying passengers in dangerous positions

Operations targeting the above violations, as well as others including violations of route charts, driving without badges or route charts, possession of forged documents, breach of operators licence, carrying passengers in excess and other offences that pose danger to travellers will continue throughout the festive season to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.

We thus issue a stern warning to all motorists and transport operators to strictly adhere to the following directives:

Buses traveling distances of over 300 kilometers must not undertake return journeys within 24 hours.

Only buses with valid route charts and PSV licences will be allowed to operate.

All drivers must possess valid driving licences, and bus drivers must have driver badges at all times while driving.

A clear photo of the driver must be displayed inside the bus.

School buses and unauthorized private vehicles shall not be allowed to operate as passenger service vehicles.

All vehicles must be in good mechanical condition, including proper tire pressure, functional brakes, and adequate lighting.

Motorists must adhere to speed limits, especially in areas with high pedestrian activity.

Drivers must avoid overtaking in risky areas such as hills, corners, and busy sections of the road.

The use of mobile phones while driving and other distractions must be avoided.

Seatbelts must be worn, and all motorcyclists and their passengers must wear helmets and adhere to all other traffic rules and regulations

Do not drink and drive.

Failure to comply with these directives will result in arrest and further legal action.
