Security Situation During Christmas Festivities and New Year Safety Advisory

Community Awareness Latest Posts Press Release

Overall, the security situation across the country during the Christmas period remained peaceful, with no major incidents of security breach reported. Only a few isolated criminal cases were registered, alongside a tragic road accident that claimed the lives of seven members of one family.

With just two days to the New Year 2026, we extend our wishes of peace, joy, and unity to everyone as we celebrate this festive season.

On 15th December 2025, we issued guidelines for organizing entertainment events and shows, as well as safety measures for prayer gatherings. As we approach the New Year, overnight prayers are expected to attract large congregations. We therefore call upon all organizers to strictly follow the issued guidelines and work closely with the police and other relevant authorities to ensure the safety and security of all participants.

After 1st January 2026, many people will be returning to the cities while others travel to their villages. We urge all road users to exercise caution and responsibility while on the road.

New Year 2026 Fireworks: Police Guidelines and Public Safety Advisory

As we welcome the 1st of January 2026, there will be a countrywide display of fireworks to mark the New Year celebrations. Each year, the Uganda Police Force receives requests for permission to conduct fireworks displays from hotels, entertainment centres and places of worship among others. These are approved through licensed blasters who are authorized to carry out the displays on behalf of successful applicants.

The following guidelines MUST be strictly observed during all fireworks displays:

Fireworks shall only be discharged by a licensed blaster representing an approved applicant.

The fireworks display must be publicly advertised in both electronic and print media particularly on local FM radio stations and newspapers prior to the event.

The duration of any fireworks display shall not exceed five (05) minutes from the time of the first blast.

Counter Terrorism (CT) Police officers shall escort the fireworks materials and supervise the display, working jointly with the respective District Police Commanders (DPCs) to ensure proper security and public safety during the display.

CT Police officers and DPCs conduct a prior inspection of all venues to confirm their suitability for fireworks displays.

Area DPCs reserve the authority to stop any fireworks display that fails to comply with these guidelines.

Any unused fireworks materials is handled only by a person holding a valid explosives blaster’s license (fireworks license).

Non-compliance with the guidelines may result in immediate termination of the display either before or during the event and may attract other appropriate actions as necessary.

Members of the public are strongly advised not to burn tires while celebrating the New Year. This destroys our infrastructure especially roads.

We also caution all firearm holders against firing shots into the air as a way of celebrating, as this poses serious risks to public safety.
