As part of our continued efforts to combat the theft of livestock and curb the illegal trade in animal products in the Bukedi South Region, Police yesterday conducted an intelligence-led operation targeting butcheries suspected of dealing in stolen animals and selling meat without the required inspection stamps.
The operation followed a series of investigations in which Police canine teams, using sniffer dogs, had identified and led investigators to several butcheries suspected to be handling meat from stolen animals. However, some operators reportedly abandoned their premises upon noticing the presence of the canine teams, making it difficult for investigators to apprehend them.
Yesterday afternoon, Police therefore mounted a coordinated intelligence-led operation targeting butcheries suspected of selling unauthorised and unstamped meat.
The operation was conducted by a multi-agency team of Police officers and other relevant authorities, led by the Busia Municipality Veterinary Officer. It covered butcheries in Arubaina, Sofia, Nangwe, Solo B and Busia Main Market within Busia Municipality.
During the operation, the team recovered a number of exhibits, including unstamped meat from goats and cattle, turkeys and chickens, weighing scales, stones, pangas and other items of evidential value.
A total of eleven (11) suspects were arrested and taken to Busia Central Police Station for further processing. The suspects were charged with stealing cattle.
Members of the community welcomed the operation and commended the Police and other participating agencies for their continued efforts to address livestock theft, noting that such operations will help deter offenders and enhance the protection of their animals.
We urge members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of livestock theft, illegal slaughter and the sale of meat from unauthorised sources to the nearest Police station.
