The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, this afternoon addressed a meeting of Local Government and City leaders organised by the Ministry of Local Government at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala.
In his remarks, the IGP urged the leaders to support and take ownership of policing initiatives, particularly the Sub-County Policing Model, noting that effective policing requires strong partnerships between the Police and local leadership.
He called upon the leaders to work collectively to enhance service delivery and to ensure that security considerations are integrated into all development planning and implementation frameworks.
The IGP further urged local governments to prioritise security in urban planning by designing well-structured urban layouts, approving building plans that incorporate safety measures, and constructing markets with anti-crime infrastructure. He noted that this approach aligns with the Area Policing Concept currently being rolled out across the country to enable a faster and more effective response to crime and emergencies.
He emphasised that close collaboration between the Police and local governments is essential in addressing emerging security challenges, including agricultural crime, urban crime, domestic violence, cybercrime, alcohol and drug abuse, and land-related conflicts.
The Inspector General of Police concluded by thanking the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Balam Barugahara, for the opportunity to address the leaders and reaffirmed the Uganda Police Force’s commitment to working closely with local governments to promote peace, security, and sustainable development.
