The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, has officially launched the third edition of the IGP Cup 2026, reaffirming the Uganda Police Force’s commitment to promoting physical fitness, teamwork and stronger community partnerships through sport.
The tournament was launched on 2nd August 2026 at Kira Road Police Arena in Kamwokya under the theme, “Championing Wellness, Unity and Professional Excellence Through Sports.” The launch marked the start of football and other sporting competitions involving police directorates, departments, units and territorial policing formations across the country.
While officiating at the event, the IGP urged police officers to embrace regular sporting activities as a way of improving physical and mental well-being, reducing work-related stress and strengthening teamwork in service delivery.
He also emphasized that sports play a vital role in creating stronger partnerships between the Uganda Police Force and the communities it serves through community policing.
The ceremonial opening match saw the Police Corporate Team register a 2-1 victory over the Naguru Community Team at Kira Road Police Arena, the home of Police FC.
The nationwide opening round also produced exciting results as teams battled for early advantage in the competition.
