Maroons 1-0 Police

Police Football Club slightly fell to Maroons FC in the battle of forces as the StarTimes Uganda Premier League matchday 27 commenced at Luzira prison ground.

Ivan Mayanja was Maroons’ hero with a 25th minute strike past third choice goalkeeper Sammon Oloka who had pulled off masterclass saves in the early stages.

Head coach Matia Lule started goalie Oloka ahead of Edward Kasibante who had missed a couple of training sessions through injury as Mathias Muwanga was servicing his two-match suspension.

Also, Reagan Matege patterned makeshift defender-cum-midfielder Jjemba Abud Shakur Ramsey in defense as Katongole Faruku and Jakony Daniel didn’t pass the late fitness test.

And in a game of both halves, Police launched a couple of counter attacks through Umaru Kasumba, Denis Kalanzi, Emmanuel Mugume and Ben Ocen though the home team stood firm.

The team’s shear brilliance further took a significant twist after the introduction of captain Kayongo Samuel, Gadaffi Kacancu and Reagan Male who gave Maroons a good run for their money.

The team’s biggest undoing was the complacency in the final third as the forwards failed to make second balls count in the final third with Allan Bukenya sending a freekick from an area of potential straight into the hands of the keeper.

The second successive defeat left The Cops in the 12th position with 30 points but assured of safety from relegation after Mbarara city’s away win at Wakiso Giants.

With three games remaining and nine points at stake, Wakiso can only manage to finish below Police who are ten points above. Hence the relegation dogfight has Mbarara City and the Purple sharks.

Police will hope to make ammends on Sunday 11th as they play host to Sports Club Villa at Kavumba recreation center on matchday 28.
