Police in Mbarara have arrested three suspects in connection with a case of shop breaking and theft reported in Mushunga Cell, Kabwesanga Ward, Rubindi-Ruhumba Town Council, Mbarara District.
The suspects have been identified as Ahimbitsibwe Joseph, 28; Tumwiine John, approximately 35; and Muhwezi Robert.
On 11 August 2026, the complainant rented a house at Kabwesanga Trading Centre, where he stocked various items to start a shop. After arranging the merchandise, he locked up the premises around midnight and briefly left for a nearby hotel to get something to eat.
When he returned about 30 minutes later, he discovered that all the items he had purchased had been stolen. He reported the matter at Rubindi Police Station early the following morning, 12 August 2026, prompting police to respond and deploy the K9 Unit.
Police dog Nana was introduced at the scene and picked up a human scent. Nana tracked the scent for approximately 800 metres, leading officers to a house occupied by Ankunda Mutetsi, who operates a bar in the area.
During questioning, Mutetsi provided information that led investigators to three men whom she identified as the above-mentioned suspects.
Police subsequently traced Ahimbitsibwe Joseph to his residence, where a search was conducted. Several shop items were recovered and positively identified by the complainant as part of the property stolen from his shop.
During interrogation, Ahimbitsibwe admitted to participating in the theft together with his two accomplices. The other two suspects were subsequently arrested and also confessed to their involvement in the break-in.
The three suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue, while efforts are underway to recover the remaining stolen property.
