POLICE TO INTENSIFY VIGILANCE IN REFUGEE CAMPS
The Territorial Police in North Western Region, actively investigating a case of theft of a gun, and the attempted murder of the OC Parolinya Base camp police post, in Obongi district, is still guarding the suspect at Moyo HC IV Hospital.
On the 12/10 2019 at around 7:30am, one Abdul Abubakari followed PC Masudio Scovia, who had gone to ease herself, and grabbed her gun. He threatened to shoot at her if she made an alarm. The first victim, however, rang the OC Police Post Ian Natukunda, who responded with a view of disarming the suspect. During the process, he was shot to the chest, and injured critically. The suspect was also shot to the buttocks after he failed to yield to attempts to disarm him, incapacitated and disarmed. Both the suspect and the officer were transferred to Moyo Health Centre IV for further treatment.
The IGP worked closely with the family of the victim, to airlift and transfer him to Nakasero Hospital, where he was operated on, following grave injuries that shattered one of his right ribs and also damaged part of his lung. His family, colleagues and workmates are by his side. He is no longer on life support and progressing well. The Director Police Health Services is also working with the Hospital management to ensure he gets the best treatment.
We strongly condemn such incidents as absolutely unacceptable. Although this was the first kind of such attacks from a Refugee Camp, we would like to stress the importance of all refugees abiding by the laws of our country. And to further remind them, that those who commit crimes against each other, must know that there are consequences to their violent actions.
We are grateful to ASP Ian Natukunda for the extreme courage and bravery he showed in the face of danger. His actions definitely, saved many others. We plan to take all necessary measures to maintain security and prohibit the use of firearms or other forms of violence within the Refugee Camps.
The suspect is temporarily being charged with attempted murder, threatening violence and robbery of a gun.
