The Uganda Police Force has intensified operations to combat the persistent vandalism of electricity infrastructure in Mukono District.
The areas of Kisoga, Kigombya, Wantoni, and Kauga have recently experienced a series of criminal incidents involving the cutting of Aerial Bundled Cables (ABCs) and the destruction of electricity installations. These acts have resulted in significant financial losses to the government and disrupted power supply to surrounding communities.
Acting on intelligence regarding a group of criminals involved in vandalizing electricity infrastructure by cutting and stealing ABC cables, a targeted operation was conducted in the early hours of 5 June 2026 at approximately 3:00 a.m.
An ambush was mounted by police officers at the suspects’ exit route in Kigombya Cell, Namumira Ward, Central Division, Mukono Municipality, as they attempted to move towards Wantoni Town. During the operation, three suspects were intercepted. One suspect managed to escape, while two were successfully arrested.
The arrested suspects have been identified as:
– Mubiru Ronny, a 25-year-old male and driver.
– Kyadondo Jamir, a 21-year-old male and boda boda rider.
A motorcycle believed to have been used in the commission of the crime was recovered, together with exhibits, including a roll of stolen ABC cable. The recovered items are currently in police custody.
Investigations are ongoing to establish the full extent of the criminal network and to apprehend the suspect who remains at large.
We appeal to members of the public to support efforts aimed at eliminating electricity infrastructure vandalism by:
– Immediately reporting any suspicious activity around electricity poles, transformers, substations, and power lines to the nearest police station or local council leaders.
– Refraining from purchasing or dealing in suspected stolen electrical materials, including ABC cables, transformers, and related equipment, as offenders risk prosecution for possession of suspected stolen property.
– Working closely with security agencies and officials from Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) by providing timely information that may lead to the arrest of offenders and the recovery of stolen infrastructure.
Residents and local leaders, particularly in the affected areas of Kisoga, Kigombya, Wantoni, and Kauga, are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
Vandalism of electricity infrastructure is not only a criminal offence but also poses serious risks to public safety, disrupts essential services, and undermines national development.
The Uganda Police Force remains committed to working with all stakeholders to safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure a reliable and uninterrupted power supply across the country.
