The Directorate of Welfare, Production and Sports, in partnership with Roofings Uganda Limited, has launched the distribution of 50,000 fruit tree seedlings to police officers as part of efforts to promote officer welfare, food security and sustainable livelihoods.
The launch was held at the Police Duty Free Shop in Nsambya, where officers received seedlings of mango, avocado and jackfruit.
The initiative is part of a programme launched by the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, aimed at promoting food security and sustainable livelihoods for police officers and their families.
Speaking at the launch, the Acting Director of Welfare, Production and Sports, SCP Timothy Halango, encouraged officers to actively participate in the ongoing welfare and production initiatives so that they can benefit both individually and collectively.
SCP Halango also emphasised the importance of accountability, adding that follow-up activities will be conducted to monitor the progress and ensure that the seedlings are properly utilised.
So far, the initiative has benefited 106 police officers at Nsambya Barracks. The Directorate plans to extend the programme to more police officers across the country.
