Police Football Club returned to winning ways in the Uganda Premier League with a convincing 2-0 victory over Lugazi at Najjembe on Wednesday.
Second-half goals from unlikely sources Richard Matovu and substitute Jemba Ramsey Shakur earned the Cops all three points in a match they largely dominated, despite the chilly conditions.
Police started brightly and created several openings, but Lugazi goalkeeper Tonny Kyamera kept the hosts in the contest with a series of important saves.
Rogers Kiwanuka was fouled in a promising position, earning Police a free-kick. Samuel Kayongo Ssekamatte’s effort forced Kyamera into a save, while Lawrence Tezikya narrowly missed the rebound after sliding in.
Tezikya later controlled a well-weighted delivery on his chest before unleashing a superb half-volley, only for Kyamera to come to Lugazi’s rescue again. The goalkeeper also denied Ssekamatte as Police continued to press.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 69th minute through left-back Matovu.
After receiving the ball from the defense, Matovu took a couple of touches forward before unleashing a stunning long-range effort from the halfway line. The strike crashed off the crossbar and bounced over the line to give Police the lead.
Bedia Ikamba came close to doubling the advantage in the 74th minute, but he headed Charles Bbaale’s cross wide from close range.
Police introduced Jemba Ramsey for the injured Kiwanuka with three minutes of normal time remaining, and the substitute made an instant impact.
Just two minutes after coming on, Jemba received the ball on the left wing, left his marker trailing with a clever dummy and squeezed a brilliant finish past Kyamera at the near post to seal the victory.
The win lifts Police to fifth place with seven points after four matches.
The Cops will return to action on October 9 against Entebbe UPPC at Hamz Stadium following the international break.
