Police are investigating incidents of student unrest that resulted in the destruction of school property in Kumi and Kiruhura districts.
In Kumi District, the incident occurred on 16 April 2026 at approximately 1930 hours at Kumi Technical School. It is alleged that during supper time, students protested over insufficient food, which escalated into a strike. The students reportedly broke into the school computer laboratory, damaging fourteen (14) computers, as well as doors and windows of classrooms. The head teacher’s office was also vandalized, with furniture and other items destroyed.
Police responded promptly to the scene, recorded statements from witnesses, and restored calm at the school. A case of malicious damage to property has been registered, and investigations are ongoing, including efforts to identify and apprehend the students involved.
In a related incident on the night of 16 April 2026, students of Mburo Secondary School in Kanyaryeru, Kiruhura District, staged a strike that led to the destruction of school property, including surveillance cameras and window panes.
During the unrest, several male students fled the school premises and dispersed into nearby trading centres.
Officers from Sanga Police Station responded swiftly and managed to restore order. Police have since taken over security at the school to prevent further incidents, while investigations into the cause of the strike continue.
We strongly condemn acts of violence and destruction of property in schools and urge students to always use peaceful and lawful channels to air grievances.
School administrators are encouraged to strengthen communication with students and promptly address their concerns to prevent escalation of tensions. Parents and guardians are also advised to engage their children on discipline and the importance of dialogue in resolving conflicts.
Police will continue to work closely with school administrators to ensure safety in all learning institutions. Any individuals found responsible for acts of vandalism will be held accountable in accordance with the law.
